OVER THE NEXT FEW NIGHTS, Fern faithfully returned via the secret passageway. She always brought along little treats wrapped in cloth and Van found himself looking forward to her visits.

He had to remind himself constantly to be patient. Everything depended on earning Fern’s trust and not playing his cards too fast or he’d risk scaring her off. Her visits provided him with two vital things: information and a small slice of sanity in a quickly fading pool of confusion.

Part of him felt uncomfortable grooming the kid like some sick pervert, but he reminded himself that he was being held hostage by a nutcase who thought he was a King...he’d do whatever it took to get the hell out of this place.

He listened to her talk about her family, and Van filed away the information to retrieve later in the long boring daylight hours that he spent looking out his window. He knew that her two brothers, Bern and Trace, were out scouting and that Bern was not happy about Wynter’s return. He wasn’t sure what to make of the scouting thing, but he was pretty sure it was his unexpected appearance that was somehow prompting a lot of action around the place. Who would have thought the discovery of his father’s identity could spark such a huge backlash? However, it was taking a neighbourly feud just a tad too far when one side resorted to taking hostages.

He still wasn’t sure what to make of it; none of the places were familiar to him. But, on the off chance he was far from Lochmanning—and if he managed to escape—he thought it wise to at least have some form of local reference on hand.

The other thing that bothered him was the amulet. When he had managed to sleep, he found that he always awoke with the same thought in his head: he needed it back. He owed it to his profession to retrieve lost evidence found at a crime scene; he also felt an inexplicable connection to it. Knowing now, that it belonged to his family and it had been taken from him, added fuel to an already volatile fire. As he paced his room each day, his revenge intensified. These people had stolen not only his freedom and his property, but the one thing he’d been dreaming of his entire life: to face the man who had ruined his life. He knew Burk and Syeira murdered the man who’d fathered him. He suspected it was Burk who’d inflicted the final blow and the injustice of knowing he would get away with murder while he had the nerve, to hold him prisoner, gnawed at his gut.

He would
